Dave Alexander

dalexander

Arts Coordinator and Music Director

My name is Dave Alexander and I am the Arts Coordinator and Music Director at Langley Christian Middle and High School. I have been at Langley Christian since 1995, when our high school music program had just 22 students.

I have been a musician since age 4, when my parents enrolled me in my first piano lessons, and I have been learning ever since! I received my musical training from the University of Alberta, where, in 1994, I earned a bachelor of Music Education with specialties in instrumental and choral conducting.

Since then I have studied at Trinity Western University and Regent College, learning about what it means to be a Christian Musician and what the craft of music has to offer to the study of God. My professional journeys over the last 15 years have led me to teaching music and directing choirs in West Africa, to worship leading at my church, to directing several full feature Broadway Musicals, leading some 26 (and counting!) music tours throughout North America, and to being guest conductor/clinician numerous times for local choral and band festivals. To say that I am a life-long learner and lover of music would not be an understatement!

Since arriving at Langley Christian, the music program has grown considerably - we now have 4 symphonic wind ensembles with over 220 students participating, 2 high school jazz bands (junior and senior), 4 choral groups (Middle School choir, High School Concert Choir, Chamber choir, and Canticum Women's Choir), and 2 high school chapel worship teams.  In all, some 300 students participate in a music activity at Langley Christian, and, regardless of your ability, talent, age, or training, there is a place for you as well. You are warmly encouraged to use the musical gifts God has given you as we (you and I) journey together in our musical endeavors.

Soli Deo Gloria. The Lord be with you.

I am involved in the local church as a pastor’s assistant, leading a GriefShare group and offering counseling for families, individuals and couples in our community. When I am not at LSC, I work as a Family Liaison for Communitas Supportive Care Society in Abbotsford, coordinating the Family Support Network and offering supportive counseling to families who have children with disabilities, parents and individuals struggling with mental health and acquired brain injuries individuals and their families.

Val Jarvie

vjarvieLearning Assistance Coordinator

After completing my degree at the University of Victoria, my husband and I moved to Japan and began to teach English.  We enjoyed it so much that we stayed there for five years.  We returned to Canada to start our family and when my youngest son entered Mrs. VanBrummelen's kindergarten class in 2000, I was hired part-time to teach high school ESL. I later became the HS Learning Assistance Coordinator and the ESL Coordinator for K-12.

Over the next few years, along with coordinating these programs, I taught Communications 9, 10, 11 and 12, English 11, and coordinated the infamous Portfolio course. Currently, I am the Assistant Principal and Learning Assistance Coordinator for the High School. I am also working on my Masters Degree in Educational Leadership at Trinity Western University, and I am really appreciating how applicable, and immediately useful, what I am learning there is to my job.

My favorite part of working at LCS is the wonderful community in which I get to work and live. I love being a connection point for parents who have questions about what is happening with their children at LCS and welcome emails, phone calls and visits!
